According to the entity that manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and treats the obtained data, two types can be distinguished:

Own cookies:

Those sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by the editor itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.

Third party cookies:

Those sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain that is not managed by the editor, but by another entity, that treats obtained data through the cookies.

In cases cookies are installed from a computer or domain managed by the editor itself, but the information obtained by them is managed by a third party, they cannot be considered as own cookies.

There is second classification according to the period of time cookies remain stored in client’s browser. Could be:

Session cookies:

Those designed to gather and store data while user accesses a web page. They are usually used to store information of interest to keep for perform the service requested by the user on a single occasion (e.g., a purchased products list).

Persistent cookies:

The data are still stored in the terminal and can be accessed and processed during a period defined by the person responsible for the cookie. This period vary from a few minutes to several years.

Finally, there is another classification with six distinct types of cookies according to the purpose of data obtained:

Allow the person responsible for them the monitoring and behavior analyze of the websites users at which they are linked. The gathered information through this type of cookies is used to measure the activity in the website, application or platform and for the elaboration of navigation profiles of users, in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of data usage made by the users of the service.

Advertising cookies:

Allow the management of the advertising spaces, in the most efficient way possible.

Behavioral advertising cookies:

They store information on the behavior of users obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allow the developing of specific profiles to display advertising based on it.

External social networks cookies:

Used for visitors can interact with the content of different social platforms (Facebook, YouTube, twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and generated only for these social networks users. The conditions of use of these cookies and the information gathered is regulated by the privacy policy of the corresponding social platform.
